Math Workbook for 1st Grade

I've been working on a math workbook for my first grader ever since my wife asked for math materials.  I've published it here on Amazon if you want to take a look.  I'm going to be updating a few things and add some more tasks soon for a second edition.

Kids approach arithmetic mastery through a creative exercise to make it much more interesting than the traditional approach.  Repetition is embedded throughout the exercise, but without realizing it's there.

Let me know if you are interested in learning more or comment if you have questions.  I'm hoping to be able to get some good resources up on this blog because there isn't much out there!  I cringe when I see that many homeschoolers are using worksheets and essentially recreating what is done in the abominable brick and mortar buildings we call schools.

I would be happy to discuss how to help kids find math more interesting and what you can do each day to help.  More to come soon...

Homeschool Charter

We are homeschooling now. Let's get this started right. This is what I had in mind.

School is a chore if kids want to be done with it in 5 minutes so they can do what they really want to do. When we say things like, “Not until you are done with school.” we are turning school into a chore for them. School is a way of life. We are going to do three things today and we can call it all school if we want to. It really doesn’t matter. This is just what we do. Today we are going to:
  • Learn things!
  • Work!
  • Play!
It doesn’t matter the order we do them, but we are going to reflect on all three things each day to make sure we have balance. Did we work enough today? Did we play enough today? Did we learn enough today?

That’s our agenda because school is a way of life. Homeschooling is the best thing ever. That traditional crap sucks. They focus on learning and keep removing more and more of work and play. Kids hate it. They hate it because it’s an unbalanced way of living. They hate it because they don’t even have any say in what they learn or how they learn it.

I don’t need a curriculum. I don’t need worksheets. Worksheets are boring! I may need some preparation before hand, but it won’t be much because I am already ready to teach! I’m 34 years old. I know things. My job as a teacher is to get them to where I am. It’s always about that. And I’m going to start where they are and work on it a little bit until they get to where I am. Homeschooling is about a way of life. We will work, play, and learn together all day, every day because that’s what we do.

I never cared much about the state curriculum or the textbook or what someone told me they should be learning that day. I always started with where they were and the goal was to get them closer to where I was by the end of the day. Tomorrow we’ll keep at it until they start to become more like me. This is the role of teacher. I’m going to get them to where I am a little bit at a time.

Let’s make an agenda today. Let’s learn things, work and play. Let’s do some math, reading, maybe some P.E., some kind of work, video games of course because there are some cool games that have been made, and maybe work on the tree house. Who cares about the order we do these things. This is a way of life. What should we work on? The house is pretty messy. Let’s clean it up. We could do some yard work. The Christmas decorations are still sitting on the deck, how about we put those away?

What? You want to play more video games? We’ve already played an hour today. What would be too much? Okay, how about we play another hour and then go play something else, learn something else, or work on something? What else should we do today? Do you want to learn how to make pancakes? Let’s look up pictures on pinterest and find a recipe for lunch. What sounds good?

The kitchen is pretty messy now. Let’s clean it up. What should we do after? Work? Play? Learn? Our Spirits need us to read some scriptures and learn about the gospel at some point just like we need to eat food for our physical bodies each day.

Let’s say prayers. How did we do today? Did we learn enough today? Did we work enough today? Did we play enough today? What will we do differently tomorrow?
